The Meaning of Mommy

Last week I had an extra boost in my spirits because Abby started calling my name a lot. Although her her first word, she really has not said "Momma" much until last week. All Moms know what I mean... how you feel like nothing could compare to the sound of your new name rolling off the lips of your first child... of course, many Moms have told me that it doesn't take long before you begin to look at your child and say (or, at least think) "could you just learn another word already?"... or "say anything else right now but Mom!" Well, my bubble burst this weekend after Abby spent the night at Grandma & Grandpa's house, and they reported that she said "Mommy" the entire time she was there, not because she missed me, but as a means of expressing her wants & needs (which are not few). It has become clear that "Mommy" means "please give me that" or "please help me with this". I guess very little will change over the next 20+ years, except she might just add a few more words behind my name to describe her need or want in detail.... sigh... "Mommy"...a sweet job nevertheless!

Here's a few pics from the last week...

Thyme for a Bath

Tonight Abby was uncharacteristically clingy while I was making dinner. After failing in my attempts to woo her over to her little kitchen for some pre-dinner playtime, I decided to give in to her persistent requests to be picked up. And I let her have a front-row seat for cooking classes with her favorite personal chef (or so I fancy myself)...we covered the basics... "this is a pot, now we are going to put water in it & put it on the stove to get hot... now let's get the salt out of the spice cabinet...oh, ok, you have your eye on a different spice of choice... no problem, you can hang on to it while Mommy uses the salt..." I was feeling fairly excited about our mini cooking class, thinking we should make it a habit, when all of a sudden we were both covered in thyme. She has clearly mastered screw-off tops... duh I knew that! Anyway, I think Abby wished she had chosen the cinnamon instead of the thyme.

The Tummy Yucky Blues

Daddy brought the tummy yuckies home with him from Atlanta on Friday night, so Abby & Daddy had a pretty terrible weekend...come to think of it, Mommy didn't have such a hot weekend either. To make matters a little tougher, Abby's eyes seem to be infected & swelling. I suspect she rubbed her eyes last night after getting sick before I got there to clean her up. Poor baby. The hardest part for me is her constant efforts to persuade me to give her some food. She constantly wanders the kitchen pointing at the counter, cabinets & refrigerator, telling me just how hungry she is. She doesn't understand or agree with the doctor's orders that she get only a teaspoonful of pedialyte every 5 minutes until her tummy stops kicking it back (sound familiar Ryan?). Here she is presenting her most persuasive case... as the judge in this case, I think she was winning the argument until her last minute slip-up...

Lambie Gets a Bath

On Thursday I had just gotten Abby ready to head out the door for a playdate, when I found her in my bathroom giving Lambie a bath. So I took a few pics, placed Lambie on the counter to dry & changed Abby's clothes. Then after gathering the final few items we needed to leave the house, I found Abby sitting in her chair... holding a wet Lambie. So we changed our clothes AGAIN!!! Not that I was ever an on-time person, but there is absolutely no hope for me being anywhere on time these days!

Dancing in the Rain

A warm bath, cozy towel & change of clothes... ten minutes. Getting to experience the awe & wonder of a rainy downpour from the vantage point of a one-year-old... priceless! How could I resist?

Abby's amazement at the rain made me think of "How Great Thou Art". I think my favorite part of being a Mom is getting to see & experience the world from the viewpoint of this little one who thinks everything is interesting & exciting.

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

More Please!

I remember the first time I offered Abby one of the food samples at Costco. It felt like such a landmark on the road from babyhood to childhood. It turns out that the landmark was a spinach nugget. I waited with anticipation to watch her reaction as her face went from unsure & curious to grinning while she downed the nugget. She moved on from spinach to watermelon (Grandma got to witness that one- Costco's sales of melons doubled during our visit), fish, burritos, fajitas, cookies, pretzels, ice cream... you name it! Today she is a sample hound. She knows where the regular sample tables are at our HEB. Even when the sample tables are unmanned and empty of samples, she knows what should be there & she lets me & all of the other shoppers know about it with her "oooooooh" and her pointing, squealing & lunging out of the side of the basket. Central Market had such a great selection of samples tonight, I actually considered making dinner out of it. But I couldn't do it... she is a "first" child afterall... when I am out shopping with a "second" or "third" child, I might give em a plate & tell em to load up. Just not yet. Anyway, here are two videos of Abby telling the lady who had just served her a Hatch chile meatball that she was ready for the second course. And, yes, I am admittedly the "first time" dorky Mom taking videos of my child right in the middle of the very busy after-work rush hour through the meat market.

Best Friends

I've always heard from others to expect that my good friends later in life will be the parents of my kids' best friends... well, we are pretty attached to our current friends, so we have been introducing you to your prearranged "to-be" best friends :-) ...

Oooooooooooh!

An online scrapbook... that's what this blog will be for us. Several companies publish blogs as hardback books, so we can have it in permanent form. Blogging is much more convenient than dragging scrapbooking tools out. Like I need another mess in my house these days! So here's the latest...

1. Your favorite word right now is "Ooooooooooooooooh!" It's for anything you find exciting, especially food. You say it when I place a plate of blueberry pancakes on your tray, but goldfish get the same excitement. Then there is also the samples at the grocery store & Costco...you get lots of laughs when you yell "ooooooh" at the samples. And last week at church you let out an excited "oooooooh" as our pastor approached with the communion plate of bread & wine... he veered a little to the right... I think he thought you might actually lunge for some. Smart man!

2. Your new word, which is quickly becoming a runner up favorite is "no, no, no". I knew it would come eventually... I suspect there's no turning back.

3. You swiped my bathing suit top from the edge of the tub & wore it around for most of the afernoon one day last week.

4. You borrowed a cell phone cord from my desk & took off down the hall to your room. Then you went straight to your car & tried to plug the cell phone cord into the gas tank. It was like you picked up the cord with the thought "oh, that will fit perfectly into the tank on my car." Perhaps, we should gather some investors to fund your research into alternative fuels.

5. Here's you & Daddy having a "cancake" date. Until this week, I could slip Daddy the syrup... but you have caught on & say "ooooooooooh"...dealing with syrup in your hair is a new reality.

6. Last week you kept bringing your earplugs to Daddy & turning your head like you wanted him to put them in. Not sure why?

7. You still have a passion for putting stuff into cubbies, containers, holes, etc. Here's a sample of your handiwork...see your sippy cup & several of Mommy's brushes sticking out of the paper cups you had already stuffed into all of the holes.

8. You have enjoyed your first Summer Olypmics, especially the gymnastics. You laugh when they flip. I narrate by saying "watch 'em run, run, run, JUMP!" So later, when we say the same to you, you try! But you don't quite have jumping down- you lift one knee, but the feet don't come off the floor together yet. Don't feel bad, Mommy failed "skipping" in Kindergarten.

9. If you are playing in the same room when the Olympics are on, you throw your hands up into the air above your head when you hear cheering. You do that when fans cheer on a CD of live music too.

10. Jessica Seinfeld's book has become my friend. That's all I'm saying, cuz Daddy might read this & I don't want to blow my secrets in the kitchen!

11. Deception in the kitchen has become normal stuff... so you don't eat avocado anymore, Mommy just spreads it on a piece of bread. And a sprinkle of brown sugar & cinammon will make even sauteed spinach do down without a hitch.

12. You talk constantly when we are in the car... sounds like Japanese to me... I wish I could catch it on camera, but you stop what you are doing as soon as you see the camera.

13. You do like fish. When I put it on your plate, you do your fishy smacking lips.

14. Here's a few old ones, but too good not to include. I always say "I love my girl"... one day I just happened to ask you "where's my girl?" & I was so surprised when you pointed at yourself. And when we ask you "is your diaper wet?" you lean over & look like you could tell.

15. I caught a glimpse of you standing next to your shoes this morning, trying to slip them on.

16. I pushed your high chair out onto the front porch so that I could water the plants while you ate breakfast. You loved it. I noticed a mosquito landed on your forehead, so I leaned over & smacked it... oh, how I would have preferred that you get a mosquito bite on your head than look at me with shocked eyes asking why I would hit you. I wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't trying to harm you so I made a game out of it... I smacked my own head a few times & laughed... until you laughed.

17. This morning you cried when I put your blankie into dryer. Then you walked off for awhile & came back with Lambie & dropped him in too.

18. You are into drawers more than ever now. Today you smell like Daddy's aftershave.

19. You have been shocking us by getting down during storytime, going to your bed, pulling your blankie through the bars & looking back at us like you want to get in.

20. I was reading you "How Do I Love You" this morning & it's so cool that you give me your big fake smile when I read "I love to see you smile." And when we read "I love to watch you sleeping" you pointed at your bed & said "Babby."

21. You are into mimicking what you see on the TV. When we were watching "Praise Baby" you lifted your hands in praise like the kid on the screen & then yawned big like the animals.

22. You decided last week to start using the sign for "more." Out of the blue! I had tried teaching you months ago, but you were too stubborn to let me hold your hands to show you. So I gave up. I can't believe you still remember. Just shows how much kids do remember. Got to be careful what we say... ;-)

23. You have stinky feet! Seriously, the stinkiest!!!

Hangin' With Old Friends

Thank God for good friends, playdates & parks! Last week we had a reunion with some good old friends we don't see as much these days... we were all reminded how much we miss each other... funny how kids change everything! But we realized the kids had as much fun as we did, so hopefully there will be more to come sooner rather than later!

Excuse Me, That's My Chair

Abby has discovered her "chair". Although we've had it since before she was born, she just started lounging in it & dragging it from room to room with her this week. It was the perfect place to watch Olympic gymnastics this afternoon... amazed that she sat still for more than three or four minutes. Here's a little armchair flashback...
